Day 4: We head into the Alps

Today was a travel day for us. We left Nice around 9 and drove about 500 km to Aix-les-Bains, which is a resort on Lac du Bourget, the largest lake in France. We stopped around noon in the town of Sisteron, which surrounded by very rocky mountains; very popular with the climbers. Sisteron is famous for it's citadel, which is a medieval fortress resting high above the village. Sisteron is considered to be the eastern gateway to Provence, and it is a regular stop on the Tour de France, probably because it is so photogenic. There is a iconic tour photo of the peloton crossing a high aqueduct like bridge with the river hundreds of feet below and the mountains in the background.

From Sisteron we drove into the Alps, over several cols before passing through Grenoble, which is very reminiscent of Denver, although smaller, and surrounded on all sides by mountains. These were perfect roads for the Tour, very smooth, steep, and windy.

We arrived at our bed and breakfast, Les Suites du Lac, in Aix just in time for their late 6 pm check in. The inn is beautiful, very modern, and has a fabulous view of the lake which it borders.

We unpacked, I cooled off in the infinity pool, and then we headed into town for amazingly delicious burgers at the Cafe Leffe.
